DESCRIPTION
Moviemaker Movie Maker 10 is an app to help make movies from photos, video clips, and music. It provides basic functions such as video joining, narration, adding background music and text caption, to more advanced features like image filter, transition effects, pan-tilt zoom effects.

It can be used to create a project presentation video at school. There is a free app version to work on quick and simple video projects. A PRO version can also be purchased.

Students are given molecular models (we usually use MolyMods), post-its, coloured pens and allowed to use their smart phones to photograph and/or video reactions.
They have to start by story-boarding the reaction sequence, allowing them to revise the reactions from their textbooks. It is good to start with a simple reaction, e.g. Free Radical Substitution of Methane by Chlorine. This will require small molecules and the reaction conditions can easily be drawn on the post-its. When they have completed the storyboard they piece together the images and videos using Movie Maker.
INNOVATIVE LEARNING OBJECT
Movie Maker allows the students to translate their storyboard to a stop-go animation that can become a part of the class digital archive and used for revision. The finished video could also be used as an assessment object in the principles of Assessment for Learning.

EXPERT'S COMMENT
Points of strength: visualisation of abstract molecular concepts, engaging and creative for students
Points of weakness: takes time for the student to learn how to use the Movie Maker functions.
Pedagogical value: makes abstract molecular concepts visible
TEACHER'S COMMENT
Chemical reactions are not covered in the 7–9th grade courses, so animating reactions may be done by ambitious students, but would not be useful in classes.
